"Proud of our heritage, leading today, ready for the future" is the theme of DAF's presentation at the IAA 2018, which this year is hosted in Hanover from 20 to 27 September. DAF Trucks is showcasing its full range of leading products and services, the result of a 90-year tradition of developing the most innovative transport solutions. DAF is the European market leader in tractor unit sales and number 1 in energy efficiency, uptime, reliability and driver comfort. The new LF Electric, CF Electric and CF Hybrid truck models, displayed at Europe's largest truck exhibition, bear witness to the Dutch manufacturer's avant-garde spirit and represent key elements of DAF's vision for the transport of the future.
With an area of 2,500 m2, the DAF stand is located in Hall 17 of the exhibition complex and presents the full range of vehicles dedicated to both international freight transport and commercial transport applications, thus defining the standard in quality, low operating costs and technical performance. Among the trucks presented by DAF are the LF for distribution, the versatile CF model, designed for a wide variety of applications, as well as the flagship truck of the DAF fleet, the XF model for long distances and heavy transport. The CF and XF were voted "International Truck of the Year 2018" thanks to numerous technical innovations, which generated a fuel economy of 7%, the new industry benchmark. The DAF LF model was awarded the distinction of "Fleet Truck of the Year 2018" in the UK.
To mark the importance that DAF and its 1,100 dealerships and service centers attach to the full range of support services for its leading products, PACCAR Financial, PacLease, PACCAR Parts, DAF MultiSupport Repair & Maintenance and the DAF Connect fleet management system have a prominent presence on the DAF stand at the IAA Motor Show.
On the path to zero-emission transport
To underline its goal of further strengthening its industry-leading position in terms of fuel efficiency and low emissions, DAF is presenting a complete range of innovative trucks. The new Innovation Trucks include the LF Electric and CF Electric models for medium and heavy urban distribution, as well as the CF Hybrid variant for the medium urban distribution segment, with zero emissions and the highest level of overall efficiency. DAF has developed these innovative solutions to meet the needs of improving air quality in cities and reducing CO emissions.2.
DAF LF Electric Innovation Truck
The DAF LF Electric is a 19-tonne, zero-emission, all-electric truck for urban distribution. The truck features Cummins technology, with an electric motor of 195 kW (266 hp) and a peak of 250 kW (340 hp). The motor is powered by a battery pack of up to 222 kWh, which provides a range of up to 220 km with the truck fully charged. The battery pack is modular and can be configured according to the customer's required range. For urban distribution applications, the 220 km range of the DAF LF Electric is ideal.
DAF CF Electric Innovation Truck
The DAF CF Electric is the ideal solution for urban distribution with higher volumes and payloads and zero emissions. This includes applications where single or double axle semi-trailers are the standard, such as supermarket deliveries.
The CF Electric is a 4x2 tractor unit for applications with a maximum gross combination weight of 37 tonnes. The truck is based on DAF’s versatile CF series, awarded the title of “International Truck of the Year 2018”, and uses advanced E-Power technology from VDL to operate purely on electricity. The core of the intelligent powertrain is the 210 kW/286 hp (240 kW/326 hp peak) electric motor, powered by a 170 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
The CF Electric has a range of approximately 100 km, suitable for high-volume urban distribution applications. The charging time is 30 minutes in fast mode, or 1.5 hours for a full charge. During periods of loading and unloading of goods, the batteries can also be charged.
DAF CF Hybrid Innovation Truck
The DAF CF Hybrid truck has been designed and developed to offer zero-emission electric propulsion in urban areas and greater autonomy outside cities, thanks to the latest generation of extra-green diesel technology. The electric-diesel combination ensures the highest degree of logistical efficiency.
DAF's CF hybrid model is equipped with a 10.8-liter PACCAR MX-11 diesel engine with 330 kW/450 hp), a 75 kW/100 hp ZF electric motor (peak 130 kW/175 hp) and a ZF TraXon gearbox specially designed for hybrid powertrains.
The electric motor is powered by an 85 kWh battery pack, which allows for a purely electric range of between 30 and 50 km, depending on the combined weight. The batteries can be charged by the diesel engine, during long-distance transport, or at a charging station with a DC charger. A full fast charge takes 30 minutes, and in 20 minutes it can be charged from 0 to 80% capacity.
Outside urban areas, the CF Hybrid is powered by an environmentally friendly and efficient PACCAR MX-11 diesel engine, with hybrid technology ensuring additional fuel savings thanks to the intelligent energy management system. Energy is recovered during braking and when using cruise control functions such as Down Hill Speed Control and Predictive Cruise Control. The recovered energy is then used by the electric motor to operate alongside the hybrid motor, for even lower fuel consumption.
The hybrid system's battery pack powers the electric driveline, the electric air compressor, as well as an optional power take-off, which can be used to power the semi-trailer's refrigeration equipment in temperature-controlled transports, thus contributing to the truck's low-noise operation.
Customer-oriented strategy
“The absolute priority for any development is to bring added value to customers,” said Ron Borsboom, member of the Board of Directors and responsible for product development. “Our approach has always been and will always be to thoroughly test any new product developments before launching them on the market. This customer-oriented strategy continues with the launch of electric and hybrid trucks. It is very likely that in the future, there will be mandatory requirements for zero emissions and low noise levels in urban areas, as cities are already announcing their intentions to create zero-emission zones.”2, which may generate a need for our customers to have a greater variety of transportation solutions available.”
The first electric trucks in the CF Electric variant will enter the testing phase with selected DAF customers this year. According to the schedule, similar tests are already planned for 2019 for the LF Electric and CF Hybrid models. DAF will be ready to launch these state-of-the-art trucks when it believes the market is ready to receive them.
90 years of DAF excellence
To commemorate the fact that Hub van Doorne laid the foundations of today's company 90 years ago, a historic DAF 1600 model from the 1960s is on display at the DAF stand at the IAA, alongside the ultra-exclusive XF 90th Anniversary Edition, launched on the market as a symbol of DAF's founding in 1928. The truck is equipped with a premium option package, elegant trim elements and the most powerful PACCAR MX-13 engine, developing 530 hp/390 kW. And the famous historic DAF logo is proudly displayed on the front of the vehicle, on the sides and rear of the cab, as well as in the luxurious, full-leather interior.
Over the past 90 years, DAF has developed the best-selling vehicles on the European market, leading the industry. DAF's market share in the heavy-duty truck segment increased from 15.3% in 2017 to 16.5% in the first half of this year. DAF Trucks is also the market leader in this segment in the Netherlands, Hungary, the United Kingdom, Poland, Belgium, Romania, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria, as well as the European leader in the tractor unit segment. In Germany, the largest European market for trucks, DAF is the most imported brand.
“By providing excellent trucks that set standards for efficiency and quality, as well as providing industry-leading service, DAF is in an excellent position to further expand its presence in Europe and beyond,” said Harry Wolters, President of DAF Trucks.
The DAF stand, located in Hall 17, features dedicated areas showcasing the most advanced trucks for long-haul and professional applications, highlighting the fact that DAF can deliver the perfect truck for any application.
